6 Ways to Be an Explorer at Home

As adventurers, it's only natural that even if we love where we're rooted, we catch the travel bug from time to time.

There's something magical about whisking away to a new place and feeling like a new version of yourself. Travel helps us realize how small we are in the world and that there are countless ways of living life. Sometimes, from the comfort of home, it's hard to capture that sense of adventure - the thrill of not knowing where you're going, the uncertainty of ordering a meal in a foreign language, or the excitement of discovering a fruit you've never seen before at a local market.

While we can't always hop on a plane whenever we crave the whimsy of an unexplored place, we can become explorers right where we are. Here are 6 ways to bring the spirit of adventure into your everyday life:

01 Eat at international restaurants

Explore the world through taste by visiting international restaurants in your area. If options are limited in your town, make it a point to seek them out when traveling within your state. In Charlotte, for example, some of my personal favorites include Pho Hoa for Vietnamese, Botiwalla for Indian, Abugida for Ethiopian, and Rice Blossom for Sichuan Chinese. Each meal is a mini-adventure, introducing you to new flavors and customs!

02 Make international friends

Expand your social circle and cultural understanding by making friends from different parts of the world. Join meetup groups, strike up conversations at international restaurants, or volunteer with organizations that welcome refugees and asylum seekers. Many newcomers to the US arrive without American friends, so this is also an opportunity to make someone feel welcome while broadening your own horizons.

03 Immerse yourself in travel content

Transport yourself around the world through travel vlogs and books. I could watch travel vlog YouTube channels like Flying the Nest and Kara + Nate for hours on end! These can provide inspiration, cultural insights, and a taste of adventure, even without a passport.

04 Learn a new language

Arguably, one of the best ways to learn about another culture is to learn their language. Whether you learn a couple of words in German before heading to Austria, or try to order in Spanish from your favorite Mexican restaurant, a little can go a long way. I think languages are fascinating- and I wish I had time to learn them all! Some of my favorite ways to learn languages are to watch shows in French, explore YouTube videos in Thai, or practice Spanish with friends from Mexico and Guatemala at church. Language learning not only opens doors to new cultures, but also keeps your mind sharp.

05 Visit international grocery stores and cook new meals

Stepping into an international grocery store is sometimes the closest you'll feel to being overseas. The (unique) aromas, colorful spices, and exotic fruits and vegetables can feel just like meandering around a Thai dalat or Moroccan souk. Challenge yourself to pick up unfamiliar ingredients (there will be many!) and try cooking a new recipe. It's a great and adventurous way to bring global flavors into your home.

06 Seek out local hidden gems

Become a tourist wherever you are. Explore parks, museums, or neighborhoods you've never visited before. Attend local cultural festivals or events - like a Greek food festival or international night. Sometimes, the most surprising adventures are right in our backyard.

Don't wait for excuses or the perfect opportunity to travel. Life will often get in the way, but adventure isn't far if you're willing to look for it. By making habits of exploring, you can cultivate a sense of discovery even in your everyday life.

Let's keep exploring, no matter where we are! How do you find adventure in your everyday life?
